Flexible Flat Cable for Drag Chains and Overhead Cranes | High-Flex Cable for Continuous Motion

The FFC-HD series is a flexible flat cable designed for drag chains, overhead crane festoon systems, and automated storage retrieval equipment. Its flat parallel-conductor profile bends only in one plane, eliminating the twisting that damages round cable bundles, while the high-flex PUR jacket withstands millions of reciprocating motion cycles. This cable is engineered for machine builders and material handling integrators who need predictable, twist-free performance in continuous motion applications.

Key Benefits:
Twist-free flat profile eliminates torsional wear in drag chains and festoons
5,000,000+ flex cycles rated for continuous drag chain operation
Space-efficient stacking for higher conductor density in tight cable troughs
PUR or PVC jacket options matched to duty cycle and environment

Flexible Flat Cable for Drag Chains and Overhead Cranes | High-Flex Cable for Continuous Motion

Round cable twists. In a festoon system or a long drag chain run, that twist adds up — cables cross, bind, and wear against each other until something fails. This flexible flat cable solves that at the source: its flat profile only bends in one plane, so it can’t twist inside a guide chain or festoon trolley, and it packs into tighter spaces than a bundle of round cables ever could.

Flat vs. Round: Why Profile Matters for Moving Equipment

Factor Round Cable Flat Cable (this product)
Twisting in guide chains Can rotate, causing wear and binding Fixed orientation — cannot twist
Space in cable trough Bundled, uses more cross-section Stacks flat, higher conductor density per space
Bend direction Bends equally in all directions Bends predictably in one plane only
Festoon system fit Requires anti-twist accessories Naturally self-aligning on flat trolleys
Typical failure mode Torsional fatigue, conductor breakage Rare when installed within flat-plane bend limits

If your equipment already fights cable twist with clamps, guides, or anti-kink devices, a flat cable often removes the problem instead of managing it.

Built for Drag Chain Guides

Inside a drag chain, flat cable needs to do two things: fit the chain’s fill ratio without binding, and survive the same reciprocating motion cycle after cycle.

  • Chain fill ratio — flat cables stack efficiently, helping you stay within the chain manufacturer’s recommended 60–70% fill without oversizing the chain
  • Self-orientation — the flat profile keeps the cable lying correctly against the chain wall instead of rotating and abrading its neighbors
  • Consistent bend plane — because the cable can only flex in its intended direction, the same conductors take the same bend stress every cycle — no random torsional fatigue

Built for Overhead Crane Festoon Systems

Festoon systems present a different challenge: long horizontal spans, trolley-to-trolley loading, and the cable’s own weight working against it.

  • Reduced sag behavior — flat construction distributes load differently than round bundles, helping maintain consistent trolley spacing across long spans
  • Trolley compatibility — designed to sit flat and stable on standard festoon trolleys without needing rotation-prevention hardware
  • Span length support — consult with our engineering team on span length and trolley spacing; flat cable selection is span-dependent, not one-size-fits-all

Where This Cable Is Used

  • Overhead crane and hoist festoon systems in warehouses and steel mills
  • Drag chain applications on CNC machines, gantries, and linear actuators
  • Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) with long horizontal travel
  • Port and container-handling crane systems
  • Any application where round cable bundles currently require anti-twist devices

Quality Assurance

Every production run of this flexible flat cable is tested before shipment:

  • Cyclic flex testing in both drag chain and festoon-style motion profiles
  • Conductor continuity and insulation resistance testing
  • Jacket abrasion testing appropriate to guide chain and trolley contact

FAQ

Can this cable twist inside a drag chain? No — that’s the core advantage of the flat profile. It’s mechanically restricted to bending in one plane, which prevents the twisting that causes wear and eventual failure in round cable bundles.

What’s the minimum bend radius for this cable? Minimum bend radius in the flat plane is approximately 6 times the cable’s thickness. Bending against the flat plane (the “hard way”) is not recommended and will reduce cable life.

Is PUR or PVC jacket better for my application? PUR is recommended for high-cycle drag chain and outdoor/oil-exposed environments. PVC is a lower-cost option suitable for lighter-duty festoon applications with fewer flex cycles.

How do I determine the right conductor count and gauge? This depends on your equipment’s power and signal requirements. Share your load and I/O requirements and our engineering team will recommend a configuration.

Can this cable be used in both drag chains and festoon systems? Yes, though flex cycle ratings differ between the two use cases. We can recommend the appropriate build based on which application — or both — you’re specifying for.

Do you supply cut-to-length or reel packaging? Both are available. Reel packaging is common for festoon installations; cut-to-length is common for drag chain runs with fixed travel distances.
